Our History

Greenville United Methodist Church is located at 5892 Claksville Highway in Joelton, Tennessee. The church began in 1876 as a single room log house of worship on Paradise Ridge. G. Spathelf, a German Lutheran, donated two acres of land for the church plot and cemetary. "The Centennial Community Lutheran Church" was destroyed in 1880 by a forest fire and replaced in 1881 by a frame church. The church became a Methodist church in 1885 and was named Greenville Methodist Episcopal Church South by the Tennessee Annual Conference. The frame church was moved to the "Grove" in 1927. In 1939, three branches of the "Methodist" movement reunited to form the Methodist Church, hence the new name Greenville Methodist Church. In 1947, the construction began on a new block church. The first service was held in the basement construction on October 30, 1949. The church met in the basement until the sanctuary was completed in 1955. On Easter Sunday, April 10, 1955, the church had worship in the ne w sanctuary for the first time. In 1968, the Methodist Church united with the Evangelical United Brethren to form the United Methodist Church. At that time, the church became Greenville United Methodist Church.

An educational building was built in July 1971 to meet the church's growing needs. In December 1976, a house and nine plus acres of land adjoining the church property, were purchased to become a parsonage for the pastor to live in. A shelter and barbecue pits were built in June 1984, enhancing Greenville's Annual Barbecue and Picnic for the church and community. In 1991, a portion of the church's yard was used to pave a parking lot. In 1993, the church added stained glass windows in the sanctuary and an expansion to the fellowship hall. The restrooms were renovated in 1994. In 1996, the church completed several places for storage. In September 2000, the church completed an extensive renovation of the basement. Major improvemets to the parsonage, pastor's study, and several Sunday School rooms were finished in 2001. In 2002, the church completed renovation of the fellowship hall and Sunday school rooms. An additional parking lot was added in 2005 and we renovated the sanctuary in 2006.

In 1991, Greenville United Methodist Church was honored by the Tennessee Annual Conference with the "Small Church of the Year" award. Our history shows the dedication of our leaders over the years to plan for the future that God has in store for us. Greenville United Methodist Church wants to continue to share God's love through Jesus Christ to the community and our world so that this church will be here for generations to come!
